Violinist Records Song at Howe Caverns By Bradley Towle HOWES CAVE — Canadian violinist Sarah Neufeld is likely best known for her work with Arcade Fire, contributing to many of the indie rock band’s biggest albums, including 2007’s “Neon Bible” and 2010’s “The Suburbs.” Neufeld took a break from Arcade Fire in 2013 to record her first solo album, “Hero Brother.” The album consists of haunting original instrumental compositions, showcasing Neufeld’s talents as a songwriter and musician, elements sometimes obscured by Arcade Fire’s massive sound. Neufeld headed to Howe Caverns to record her son

“Sharon Things - Local Happenings for Sharon Springs” - 10 May 2024

By Alexis Pencar Hey Neighbors! The weather has been warm enough to want to plant seedlings in the garden but we should all know better by now! After a wet weekend expected, next week is forecasted to be cloudy but lows are expected to creep into the 40s again with a relief from the chill late next week. Keep in mind the Farmers Almanac and long range weather for our area predicts a total precipitation of 4.5 inches for the rest of May, which would actually put us at 1 inch over the average. THE CATSKILL GEOLOGISTS BY PROFESSORS ROBERT AND JOHANNA TITUS - 10 May 2024

A Day of Doing Art, Part One Ice ages consist of many climatic cycles. Cold and warm weather periods alternate with each other. The last big cycle in the Catskills was perhaps about 16,000 years ago. That, called the Grand Gorge advance, consisted of several shorter cycles. The last one of those witnessed a glacier rising about halfway up Kaaterskill Clove. It reached just above a waterfalls called Fawn’s Leap, then the climate warmed and the glacier ground to a halt. Melting followed and the ice retreated out of the clove. It left a very sizable boulder behind, and that is something geologist

Whittling Away with Dick Brooks - 10 May 2024

Books Telly, my trusty canine companion and I, having completed our morning chores, retired to the house for a second cup of coffee and a rawhide chewy. Having settled comfortably into my recliner and Telly nestled comfortably on his big comfy bed, it was a perfect time for our morning ponder. Sometimes it’s a discussion but since Telly was paying more attention to his chewy than to me, I just relaxed and let my mind wander around prospective topics for today’s think. I settled on books since there are a pile of them next to my chair. Books have been my friends since I was a small child. Long

BETTER THAN HEARSAY - 10 May 2024

To EMS Be or Not To EMS Be By Michael Ryan CATSKILL - The next couple of weeks could transform the emergency medical services landscape or leave it stuck in the mud. Greene County Legislature members have approved a resolution calling upon their counterparts in Albany to pass a series of bills that would advance ambulance response into the 21st Century. Those bills were mystifyingly left out of the recent State budget after local lawmakers, along with many municipal officials and EMS personnel statewide, had been led to believe they were a slam dunk. There is a related story in our Legislature

LEGISLATURE STUFF - 10 May 2024

What the EMS What? By Michael Ryan CATSKILL - Befuddlement surrounds a resolution approved by the Greene County Legislature, last week, related to the rejection by State lawmakers of several bills aimed at the rescue of rescue services. While the local resolution still needs to pass muster by the full board, it is expected to do so later this month, having moved unanimously thru a Health Services committee meeting. The local resolution urges the New York Senate and Assembly to enact a “package of legislation to strengthen our emergency medical services.” Calling emergency medical services a “v
